This cooking course gives you the fundamental skills you need by combining online learning with hands-on practice.

Occupation description

Commercial chefs prepare, season, and cook food for restaurants or caterers.

Their job involves:

  • Verifying the quality of food by inspecting it.
  • Food preparation, seasoning, and cooking.
  • Using kitchen appliances.
  • Dividing it into portions, plating it, and adding sauces, garnishes, and gravies.
  • Food storage in facilities with controlled temperatures.
  • Cooking by specific nutritional needs.
  • Cleaning the spaces used for meal preparation.

Commercial cooks may also:

  • Create menus and project the amount of food needed.
  • Instruct additional kitchen workers and apprentices.

Note: Cooks employed in catering or dining establishments’ commercial kitchens fall under this profession. It excludes jobs in factories or environments with minimal service, such as fast food, fast casual, or takeout restaurants, coffee shops, bars, or mall cafés with a restricted menu.

Stage 1:

Documentary Evidence Assessment

We will examine your documentation to ensure it meets the training and employment standards and proves you have the abilities, know-how, and experience required to work as a commercial cook.

Stage 2:

Technical Assessment

If you make it through Stage 1, you will have a technical interview with our assessor. The assessor will question you regarding applying the knowledge needed to work in your trade in Australia. No interpreters will be permitted for the technical interview, which will be conducted in English.
