Fitter-Welders are skilled workers who put together and weld metal parts and pieces to create machines and equipment used in production.

Occupation description

Fitter-Welders are responsible for fitting, assembling, and welding metal parts and subassemblies to build production machines and other equipment.

Their tasks include:

  • Reviewing drawings and specs to decide on materials, methods, and order of operations, as well as machine settings.
  • Using specialized tools and machinery to cut, grind, and shape metal and other materials.
  • Welding metal sections together using various techniques.
  • Fitting fabricated metal parts into products and assembling them to create machines and equipment.
  • Using precision measuring tools to check accuracy, clearance, and fit of fabricated and assembled metal parts.
  • Cutting, threading, bending, and installing hydraulic and pneumatic pipes and lines.
  • Identifying and fixing issues with tools and machinery, and carrying out routine maintenance.

    The qualification needed for this job is MEM30205 Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade. To get this qualification, you have to show your skills and knowledge in specific units. There are 32 units in total:

    • 12 are core units.
    • 20 are elective units.
