Fitter-Welders are skilled workers who put together and weld metal parts and pieces to create machines and equipment used in production.
Occupation description
Fitter-Welders are responsible for fitting, assembling, and welding metal parts and subassemblies to build production machines and other equipment.
Their tasks include:
- Reviewing drawings and specs to decide on materials, methods, and order of operations, as well as machine settings.
- Using specialized tools and machinery to cut, grind, and shape metal and other materials.
- Welding metal sections together using various techniques.
- Fitting fabricated metal parts into products and assembling them to create machines and equipment.
- Using precision measuring tools to check accuracy, clearance, and fit of fabricated and assembled metal parts.
- Cutting, threading, bending, and installing hydraulic and pneumatic pipes and lines.
- Identifying and fixing issues with tools and machinery, and carrying out routine maintenance.

The qualification needed for this job is MEM30205 Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade. To get this qualification, you have to show your skills and knowledge in specific units. There are 32 units in total:
