Unit Group 2331: Chemical and Material Engineers.

Chemical and materials engineers are crucial in the design and specification of chemical processing systems. They also construct and run commercial chemical plants and oversee the industrial processing and production of products that experience physical and chemical changes. In addition, they study the properties of metals, ceramics, polymers, and other materials, and evaluate and utilize their technical and commercial applications. These engineers work in a variety of industries and play a vital role in the development and manufacturing of a wide range of products.

    Task:

    • Creating designs for chemical process systems and planning control systems for processes such as those used to remove and separate components, effect chemical changes, test and assess fuels, transport heat, and govern the storage and handling of solids, liquids, and gasses.
    • Monitoring the operation and maintenance of equipment to ensure maximum efficiency in safe operating circumstances.
    • Ensuring that the correct materials and equipment are used and correspond to standards.
    • Diagnosing malfunctions in chemical plants and instituting remedial action
    • Studying product utilization and pollution control challenges
    • Reviewing designs for new products and submitting material selection suggestions based on design standards and characteristics such as strength, weight, and cost.
    • Planned and implemented laboratory activities to develop new materials and manufacturing techniques to meet production cost and performance standards.
    • Collaborating with producers of materials, such as metals, ceramics, polymers, cements, and elastomers, throughout the exploration and evaluation of materials suited for specific product applications
    • Reviewing product failure data, executing laboratory tests to identify or reject possible causes, and providing advice on how to address any problems.
