Occupation description
Airconditioning and refrigeration mechanics are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing commercial and residential air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment.
Their job involves:
- Putting out installation reference points and determining task needs from drawings and specifications.
- drilling holes, mounting bracket installation, pipe cutting, bending, and threading
- installing and maintaining parts, including motors, condensers, evaporators, compressors,
- copper lines for steam, gas, refrigerant, compressed air, oil, and chilled water, as well as switches and gauges
- connecting equipment by bolting, soldering, riveting, welding, and brazing pipes, and verifying alignment and fit accuracy
- putting gas or fluid into systems to look for leaks
- testing, inspecting, and modifying refrigeration system mechanisms
- Using vacuum pumps, remove the test gas and fluid, then fill with refrigerant.
- inspecting and overhauling refrigeration systems, identifying issues, and fixing and swapping out faulty parts
- Modifying system mechanisms and controls, putting systems back together, and noting why they broke and what steps were taken to fix them.

Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR)
When someone passes the practical skills assessment for the UEE32220 Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, VETASSESS issues them with an OTSR, a type of technical skills documentation. The OTSR enumerates the technical abilities and knowledge proven about the qualification and any deficiencies that must be filled to reach the complete standard, such as the Australian wiring regulations for electrical trades.
You will be granted a Trainee License against the OTSR by the Australian Refrigeration Council Ltd (ARC), the leading authority for Australia’s refrigeration and air conditioning sector. This license will allow you to work under supervision until you fulfill the complete (unrestricted) license requirements. You must also receive extra permits and permissions from state and territorial regulators to fulfill other non-skill requirements. To obtain a UEE32220 Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration and a full license, you must
- a minimum Australian context gap training, and
- A period of supervised employment in your trade.
Registered Training Organizations (RTOs) in Australia provide gap training courses, including TAFE institutions. Further details regarding gap training are available on the Energy Skills Australia website.
Following your successful completion of the gap training and receipt of a Statement of Attainment from the RTO, you have the following options:
Apply for your Certificate III qualification from the RTO, where you finished your gap training. Then, to obtain a full license, you can show this qualification to the appropriate licensing authority OR
To obtain your Certificate III, submit an application to cdrforAustralia. After reviewing your gap training records, cdrforAustralia will provide you the necessary Certificate III qualification. You can show this qualification to the appropriate licensing authority to get a complete license. Please be aware that in addition to possible extra requirements, cdrforAustralia will charge an administrative fee for providing the qualification.
